Defragmenting harddrive

The OS X file system HFS is really intelligent avoiding file fragments, so that you can quickly access your files. Also Mac is famously known for its absolutely great fast and quick workflow.

But in the last two weeks I arranged many backup files and my harddrive got quite filled.

I wanted to know what happened to my files due to the large movement access, so I decided to install iDefrag for Leopard. It addionally shows statistics about defragmentation and a high score of most defragmented files.

It is very exciting, that I have almost 800.000 files and only 1.000 of them are fragmented!

Of course I let it run thru, and it has different algorithms and other cool features, like sleep or shutdown after completion, so it is good idea to do it over night.

With the B-Tree reorganization routines, I gained a nice perfomance boost.
