Trotz der langen Spieldauer von neun Minuten wird das Musikstück nicht langweilig. Häufig wechselnde Instrumente und ein spannender Aufbau zwingen einen fast dazu das Lied gleich nochmal hören zu wollen.

Das letzte meiner Werke ist eine Minimal Acid House – Produktion namens “Underpressure”. Eine schöne TB303 Linie zieht sich durch das ganze Stück hindurch garniert mit dezenten Filtern. Ein sanfter Lauf ohne ruckartige Breaks lässt einen Hauch von Trance durchscheinen. Durch nur minimalistische Abwechslungen wird der Song selbst bei einer Spieldauer von etwa achteinhalb Minuten nicht langweilig.

Den charakteristische Klang der 303 hat mich dazu inspiriert in dem Musikvideo einen Smiley tanzen zu lassen, der an die klassische Acid-Zeit erinnert.

In sozialen Netzwerken wird also oftmals zum Remixen aufgerufen und viele Musiker – vor allem Hobbymusiker machen sich an die Arbeit. So hat der Verlag eine Riesenauswahl und kaum Arbeit und Kosten – außer natürlich der Sichtung beziehungsweise das Anhören des Materials.

Amateure machen aber schnell einen entscheidenden Fehler, nämlich loslegen und das Werk abgeben, ohne sich vorher um die Rahmenbedingungen zu kümmern oder sie überhaupt zu lesen.

Wenn die Bedingungen nicht klar festgelegt werden, wirst du als Künstler leer ausgehen. Wenn dir versprochen wird, es gehe nicht um Geld, sondern um Namedropping, dann lass gleich die Finger davon!

Namedropping soll heissen, dass dein Name genannt wird und so dein Berühmtheitsfaktor auf der Skala steigen soll. Aber wer garantiert dir das, wenn du nichts in der Hand hast? Niemand – und es wird auch nicht passieren. Sollte das Ganze ein kommerzieller Erfolg werden, siehst du nicht einen Cent, und was noch schlimmer ist – deinen Namen sicherlich auch nicht!

Ein Beispiel aus folgender Kommunikation, was mir sofort ein Beweis an Unprofessionalität ist:

Unten kannst Du einmal die Original-Version zur Orientierung und die VocalParts für die Produktion runterladen. Ich mache da jetzt auch keinerlei Vorgaben, sondern möchte Dir ganz allein überlassen, wie Du das drehst…

Deadline wäre allerdings der 20.April, da die Nummer ja auch international veröffentlicht werden wird und die DJ Promo bereits für Ende April gebucht ist.

Kann ich die Vocals auch ohne störende störende Geräusche also den reinen Acapella bekommen?

Leider gibt´s die Vocals nur in dieser Vorlage

Soweit schon mal eine nette Kommunikation. Allerdings hat mir schon die letzte Antwort zu denken gegeben. Wenn die Vocals nicht klar und ohne Störgeräusche vorliegen, liegt es nahe, dass diese nicht selbst erstellt, sondern eher irgendwoher entnommen wurden. Daher habe ich eine weitere Mail gesendet und eine überraschende Antwort erhalten.

Bevor ich allerdings anfange, sollten wir uns noch über die Rechte einig sein.

1. Die Nutzungsrechte der vorhanden Melodien sowie Gesang sind vorhanden und ich darf diese nach meinem eigenen Ermessen verwenden.

2. Das Copyright bleibt bei mir und ich räume dir das Recht der uneingeschränkten Verbreitung ein solange mein Name genannt wird.

3. Sollte es zu kommerziellen Verkäufen kommen, so erhalte ich eine angemessene Vergütung von den jeweiligen Einnahmen. Bitte nenne mir einen entsprechenden Prozentsatz.

4. Auch ich habe das Recht mein Werk uneingeschränkt weiterzuverbreiten. Vorzugebende Quellenangaben bitte ich mitzuteilen.

5. Bei Presseterminen besteht für mich keine Anwesenheitspflicht. Falls ich erscheinen soll, müssen Reise- und Aufenthaltskosten im Voraus übernommen werden.

Es haben sich mehr als 10 (überwiegend namhafte und erfolgreiche Producer ) für einen Remix gemeldet …und wie immer bei Remix-Aufträgen ist alles easy und locker bei den Jungs, denn sie wissen, dass es dabei nicht um Geld geht, sondern um Namedropping, zumal der Song in zahlreichen Ländern veröffentlicht wird.

Du kommst hier aber mit Dingen um die Ecke, die einem „Superstar“ entsprechen. Tut mir leid, aber ich möchte unter diesen Umständen von einem Remix Abstand nehmen und muß jetzt darauf hinweisen, daß die bereits überlassenen Parts weder benutzt noch in irgendeiner Form weiterverbreitet werden dürfen.

Am besten gleich alles vom Rechner löschen.

Die von mir geforderten Randbedingungen sind Bestandteil eines stinknormalen Verlagsvertrages und setzt fest wie alles geregelt wird. Ein Vertrag ist da, um beide Seiten im Streitfall abzusichern – nicht, um einem selbst oder dem anderen die Schuhe auszuziehen. Das hat weder etwas mit Geldgier noch mit Star-Allüren zu tun. Sollte es ein Erfolg werden, so wirst du unter diesen Voraussetzungen dein verdientes Namedropping auch erhalten. Was spricht ausserdem dagegen im Erfolgsfall etwas vom Kuchen abzugeben?

Wer sich von vornherein auf diese fairen und marktüblichen Bedingungen nicht einlässt, kann meines Erachtens nach weder professionell noch seriös arbeiten.

Lies dir am besten die fünf Punkte noch einmal durch und verinnerliche sie.

Lizenzen bringen Probleme

Allerdings soll es bei diesem Codec in Zukunft einige lizenzrechtliche Probleme geben und die Suche nach Alternativen ist die einzig vernünftige Lösung.

Die Zukunft

Bei modernen Browsern der neuen Generation wie Google Chrome, Firefox 4, IE9, etc. ist ein Audio- und Videoplayer bereits integriert, um das Video-Tag einzubinden. Das Format WebM mit dem VP8 Codec ist bereits gut unterstützt.

Google ist sogar einen Schritt weitergegangen und hat H.264 direkt rausgeworfen und setzt nur noch auf VP8. Bei Youtube wird ebenfalls alles dahin codiert und abgelegt. Somit ist der Trend scheinbar festgelegt.

Press play on tape

Das Abspielen innerhalb der oben genannten Browser funktioniert bereits. Einfach die Videodatei mit dem Browser entweder über das Menu öffnen oder per Drag und Drop reinwerfen. Auch andere Wiedergabeprogramme wie VLC zeigen die Inhalte einwandfrei.

Encodieren

Leider gibt es auf dem Mac mit OS X 10.6.6 noch keine native Unterstützung, doch es gibt eine sehr bequeme Methode für Quicktime 7 Pro. Einfach das Paket WebM Component Installer.pkg installieren und schon kann man im WebM-Format exportieren.

Ein kurzer Test mit dem VP8 Codec hat sogar noch kleinere Dateien als mit H.264 Codec erzeugt – allerdings muss ich das erst noch genauer unter die Lupe nehmen.

Je mehr desto besser?

Der Hype um immer hochauflösendere Fotos und Videos nimmt auch heutzutage noch nicht ab. Kameras verkaufen sich nur, wenn sie möglichst viele Megapixel aufwarten. Genauso verhält es sich mit den Videoaufahmegeräten. HD und Full-HD sind dabei die Zauberwörter.

Je mehr desto besser – das ist aber nur zum Teil richtig, denn eine hohe Auflösung hilft auch nicht weiter, wenn die dahintersteckende Optik minderwertig ist.

Wohin mit den Daten?

Schon lange lohnt es sich gar nicht mehr seine Dateien auf CDs oder DVDs zu brennen, denn da passt einfach viel zu wenig drauf. Durchschnittliche Digitalbilder sind ca. 1,5 MB groß. Auf eine CD passen etwa 700 MB, also ist Platz für knapp 450 Bilder. Eine Standard-DVD fasst ca. 7 mal so viel wie eine CD.

Eigentlich eine ganz tolle Sache, denn da passt der ganze Urlaub schön sortiert auf eine Scheibe.

Warum nicht brennen?

Das Problem mit diesen brennbaren Datenträgern ist allerdings, dass die Datenbeständigkeit unterirdisch ist. Die Hersteller versprechen Haltbarkeiten von vielen Jahren.

Meine Erfahrung – und ja, auch mit Markenrohlingen – zeigen das genaue Gegenteil. Nach etwa 1-5 Jahren war von meinen gesicherten Bits und Bytes nicht mehr viel übrig. Von anderen habe ich ähnliche Schaudergeschichten gehört.

Wohin dann?

Externe Festplatten sind bestens geeignet, um große Datenmengen auch dauerhaft zu sichern. Sie brauchen wenig Stauraum, lassen sich bequem am Computer via USB oder Firewire anstöpseln, sind als Datenträger verfügbar und das Kopieren geht rasend schnell.

Außerdem kann man auf Festplatten nicht mehr benötigte Daten einfach löschen – versuch das mal bei einer DVD.

Eine externe Platte mit einem Terabyte erhält man deutlich unter 100 Euro und darauf passen dann ganz grob überschlagen 700.000 Bilder.

Bildgrößen

Die Größeneinheit für Bilder ist in der digitalen Welt in Pixeln angegeben. Ein Pixel entspricht einem Bildpunkt den, man auf dem Bildschirm sehen kann. Damit wäre das Bild aber nur schwarz-weiß, daher gibt es noch eine Farbtiefe, die dann angibt wieviel Bits ein Pixel enthält um einen farbigen Punkt darzustellen.

Gängige Farbtiefen, sicherlich auch bekannt aus der Bildschirmauflösung des Computerbildschirms sind

• 8 Bit mit 256 Farben
• 16 Bit mit 65536 Farben
• 24 Bit mit 16,7 Millionen Farben
• 32 bit mit gerundet 430 Millionen Farben.

Rechenbeispiele

Bei einer Bildschirmauflösung von 1900 x 1200 Pixeln und einer Farbtiefe von 24 bit haben wir dann 5,4720,000 Bits. Ein Byte umfasst acht Bits, also haben wir dann 6,52 MB nur an Rohdaten für die Grafikkarte!

Rechnen wir das noch einmal für eine Digicam mit 12 Megapixeln, dann haben wir (4048 x 3040 x 24) / 8 = 35 MB Rohdaten pro Bild.

Daraus lernen wir, dass Fotos für den Bildschirm so eine Auflösung gar nicht benötigen, da reichen Bilder mit 5 Megapixeln bei 2595 x 1944 mehr als aus.

Rohformat?

Spiegelreflex-Profikameras allerdings können die Bilder tatsächlich im Rohformat ablegen und dann sind die Dateien dann auch so riesig! Profi-Fotographen wollen und brauchen die bestmögliche Qualität für Ihre Arbeit.

Warum sind meine Bilddateien kleiner?

Digitalfotos mit 35 MB findet man so allerdings bei einer einfachen und herkömmlichen Digicam nicht auf seiner Speicherkarte, weil die Bilder durch spezielle Algorythmen komprimiert sind.

Dabei gibt es zwei wesentliche Methoden der Bilddatenkompression, nämlich mit oder ohne Qualitätsverlust.

Eine Datenkompression funktioniert in der Regel so, dass nach wiederkehrenden Mustern gesucht und diese dann zusammengefasst werden. Somit benötigt man weniger Platz.

Methode 1: Verlustfrei

Gängige verlustfreie Formate sind RAW, BMP, TIFF, PNG, JP2, das heißt, alle Bilder, die in diesen Formaten gespeichert werden, behalten ihre volle Qualität. Die allerbeste Kompression hat allerdings JP2, danach folgt PNG und TIFF. RAW und BMP komprimieren gar nicht.

JP2 alias JPEG2000 wird von Windows 7 direkt leider gar nicht unterstützt. Mit dem kostenlosen Apple Quicktime Picture Viewer oder XNView lassen sich diese allerdings anzeigen. Sicherlich kann es auch die eine oder andere Bildbearbeitung. Auf dem Mac ist das gar kein Problem, es ist keine Zusatzsoftware nötig.

Alphakanäle werden von TIFF, PNG und JP2 unterstützt.

Beispiel Desktop-Wallpaper:

• BMP = 6,9 MB
• TIFF = 2,4 MB ^ Ersparnis 35%
• PNG = 1,8 MB ^ Ersparnis 73%
• JP2 = 0,3 MB ^ Ersparnis 95% (6 x kleiner als PNG)

Methode 2: Verlustbehaftet

Beim Musikformat MP3 wird eine Psychoakkustikanalyse vorgenommen und somit werden nicht oder nur schwer hörbare Töne schlichtweg weggelassen. Deshalb bleibt weniger Material übrig das komprimiert werden muss und die Dateien werden letztendlich kleiner.

Bei Bildern funktioniert das recht ähnlich, denn oftmals liegen sehr ähnliche Farben nebeneinander und werden dann einfach zusammengefasst und später durch berechnete Annäherungen (Interpolation) wieder auf dem Bildschirm dargestellt.

Das dort bekannteste Format ist JPG. Man kann sogar die Höhe des Qualitätsverlusts mit den meisten Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen festlegen und dann selbst bestimmen wieviel Verlust man in Kauf nehmen will.

Der Vorteil ist klar: die Datei wird kleiner.

JP2 kann übrigens bei Bedarf genau wie JPG auch verlustbehaftet speichern.

Did you ever plug in a headphone? Then the same happens like on the iPhone: The Computer is muted and the headphone makes the music. I hate that! Why? Because I am so fussy and want to spare my hardware. Especially jacks are sensitive and easily getting loose. So it would be so much better having a headphone connected, put it aside and still enjoy the iMac’s speaker sound as well. There is no option anywhere in the preferences, so I have to accept this. The only solution I know is getting an external sound card.

Phase change

So I did, and I am the proud owner of the external Terratec Phase X24 Firewire audio card. Really great device, and you know what? I can connect a headphone with still having sound everywhere. YES!

Record

I love making music and hopefully you have subscribed my audio podcast. To create my sounds I mainly use software like Record in combination with Reason. Record is so great in connecting audio hardware with multiple inputs and outputs.

Combine in, combine out

For my latest song I needed to record my voice while playing the music inside Record. That masterpiece software is able to do that, but my USB microphone was not in there. Checking out all the devices, I noticed for the first time, that Record combines audio devices with inputs and outputs.

Shit happens, my PhaseX24 and the Samson GoMic was not listed up in combination.

Got a Mac? Do it yourself!

Damn, yeah! I am a Mac user, so that’s no big deal. I will create my own device!

I have just opened the Audio and MIDI settings, and voila, there is the add button. Give it a name and click all devices I want to have in there. Made a check on PhaseX24 and one Samson USB GoMic, that’s it! Restarting Record, running to preferences and there it is: my PhaseX24+GoMic device.

Previously, when a user clicked a link leading to a podcast, it brought you to an empty white web page. Then, iTunes was opened – and if not installed you got a offer to download the free ware. The user did not know what is to be expected.

The new change is, that you will now see a tiny preview with the same information that is presented only in iTunes, before. The behavior of starting iTunes or the download offer is still there. Click the picture on the right to see an example with my podcast.

You also can view video and pre-listen audio!

Sometimes my fingers are too fast and something is trashed, especially podcast episodes. If you are wacking the same as me, then I am sure this or the other time you want it being undone.

Of course there is a simple and quick way:

Just select any episode or the podcast itself, then hit on the bottom left the unsubscribe button. Then it turns to subscribe, and press it again. Then iTunes will reload the feed and you can download the lost childen, again.

First of all I thought it was corrupted, because even on plugging it out and in again did not change anything in that misbehavior. To be sure it is not my fault, before claiming the Apple support, I restarted my iPhone.

Still not working and I even made a complete reset and restore. The solution is somewhat strange!

In microphone jack was some dust – just such a little that I could not even detect it on blowing into the socket or plugging the headset connector in with a smart pressure. With a wooden toothpic I managed to get it out. It was just a very little tiny fluff.

After cleaning everything went fine, again. So keep it clean and easy going!

With that version Apple focuses to the average user with functions like trimming and uploading videos to Youtube. This may look simple, but beware that cutting and converting has to be done before the upload can begin and now it runs totally by itself without your interactivity.

Trimming was possible in the former versions, too, but not as easy as it is right now. Apple kindly kept the older Quicktime 7 Player and moved it into the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. If it is not there for you, you may reinstall it from your Snow Leopard DVD.

I am lucky about that, because there are some mighty features I absolutely do not want to miss like exporting with tons of options and different playback speeds.

On the release time of the free application Skype for iPhone, I could not let it be to install it. Because I am lazy at typing I initially tested it with just a small chat, only.

But, today I had a situation that I needed to do a Skype call to ask something. The voice quality is amazing good! The person I called just used his MacBook with the integrated Microphone.

A very big plus for Skype is, that when I turned my Mac on, the iPhone’s history was inserted immediately to my Mac’s Skype!

Very great to keep the conversions complete.

Blackberry HS-655+ headset

The Bluetooth headset branded with HS-655+ or just Blackberry 655+ is a great and tiny thing. It supports Bluetooth 2.0 technology and has a good sound quality and distance range. There are lot of testing reports in the web, but no useful reference manual or user guide. The delivered one is one of the worst I have ever seen. So I will give a neat summary below.

I bought that headset in combination of my Blackberry 8110 which is now replaced with my iPhone 3G – the best(est) PDA / iPod / phone available on the planet. I suggest you getting it, because the price cheapened from about $100 down to approximately $60 and you also can use it on every Mac.

The original vendor is Plantronics with the model number ASY-12747-002, but there is not valuable manual out, either.

Here we go for the short, but explainary summary. I really can not image what inherited them for writing just these few words:

Charging:
Plug a USB cable into the cradle. Put the headset into the cradle. When it vibrates once it signals, that power is available. When it is blinking red in 3 second steps, it is charging. When the light is off, the battery is full.

Power on:
Hold down the button for 3 seconds. When it is on, then it blinks blue every 5 seconds.

Power off:
You need to disconnect bluetooth from the other device, first. Else the headset will not react on power off. When disconnected, hold down the button for 4 seconds. When the light it is off, the headset is totally powered off, too.

Pairing:
Power it on (see above). Release the button and hold it down for 10 seconds. Then the button blinks alternating red and blue. Find the headset with your phone or Mac. When you are asked for the passkey, enter 0000 (for times zero). When paired it blinks every 5 seconds blue as described on power on.

Note on Pairing: When powered on and your device is findable, it could happen that is asked for the passkey without holding the button for 10 seconds down.

Now, go and get it! Maybe, we will see/hear us in a Skype call.

Skype

Yes, I do have an account on almost every important protocol and I was managing them with the Adium client. That is really a great and superb tool with an awesome tight interface. But, I have made a hard and ultimate decision.

I decided to take just only one messenger and one protocol, since now: Skype.

Why Skype?

• It runs on important platforms: Linux, Mac, Windows, Mobile phones.
• The interface is free available and really easy. All functions an instant messenger needs to have are there. My favourite is to sort out old and unused contacts.
• Encryption is enabled by default. Other instant messenger do not even encrypt at all or plugins are not easy to install.
• Can run even through firewalls.
• Chat, audio/video possible. Even conferences with multiple users.
• Standing out audio/video quality and reliable.
• Working and fast file transfers, also encrypted.
• Less network traffic by using just only one protocol.
• Available web graphics to show current online status.
• Great directory with search. You can specify by yourself what is visible by anybody and what to your personal contacts.

If you need, you can charge services at fair prices:

• Call from internet to local lines and mobile phones.
• Send SMS to mobile phones.

That list is incomplete, but that points are facing exactly what modern instant messaging in those days should be able to do. There are even LAN/WiFi phones available having Skype implemented. Also, having just one account makes it easier to configure and to handle.

Delete Podcast Episode

When I am on the way I mostly consume my favourite podcasts instead of listening to music. When beeing back on my Mac I see which episodes are played in iTunes and then I do mark and delete them. But when I have listened to different podcasts I really hate it to search through my quite long directory and delete them manually one by one.

Today I have detected, that I can delete episodes directly on the iPhone which saves me some time and unconvinient title seeking.

When beeing in the episode list, slide the “unwanted” episode from left to right. The red delete button known from other built in applications will fade in. You can either click it to delete or slide again this entry to remove the button.

Super Remove Dead Tracks

On a Mac almost everything is scriptable, and so is iTunes. One of those free cleaners is Super Remove Dead Tracks. Install it as described, then restart iTunes. From the scripts menu bar select the Super Remove Dead Tracks and just wait for completion. At the end, a logfile is placed on the desktop, so that you can see what was removed. If something went wrong, you can restore the files from the trashcan.

TapeLink USB

Not very long time ago, I was sampling old mix tapes for a friend. Still owning a Marantz DCC, I took advantage of it’s perfect analog to digital converters to get the best quality possible.

Afterwards, I did some mastering with noise reduction, compressors and equalizers. After all this time, the sound is damn good.

The deep memories of the legendary clubs and radio shows of Steve Mason will live forever, and not only in my mind.

But doing all that cost me a lost of expensive time and I wish the TapeLink USB would have been existing, already.

Is it fate, that things we do need will be produced just after spending almost a half century?

Ohrenschmalz on Youtube

Yesterday, I spent hours on waiting for encoding and uploading a video containing my techno track Ohrenschmalz to Youtube.

I really appreciate it now being widescreen format 16:9. So I tried to get up in the new resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. Youtube recommends AAC audio and H.264 video compression.

After uploading a video, Youtube is going to process the file. I think they do some re-encodings to the flash format file which is playbacked afterwards. The power of the Youtube servers gained really much, because this is quite fast with just waiting about only about 10 minutes for about 400 MB to convert.

If you provide a good quality video, then you have a high quality version and a standard quality version. In my opinion the standard resoultion is really bad and only useful for low band internet speed connections.

Now, the bad thing which really costed me nerves and endless time!

The audio is only playing normal in standard quality. When using high quality, it was jumping, crackling, noisy and no music anymore, at all.

The only thing I could to was to experiment with the resolution and encoding by try and error. My results say, that if you want a HD video which will work properly on every Youtube resolution you need to upload with following parameters I used in Quicktime:

• Video size 1280 x 720
• Video Codec H.264 with high or best quality
• Audio Codec AAC stereo, 160 kbs average

Note that the files will get really big about 600 MB to 1 GB and the upload will take long time on a standard 16.000 DSL connection. My average speed is approximately 100 MB in 15 minutes.

Use the beta uploader enabling you to upload multiple files at once. Start the upload first, and then you have the possibility to edit the tags, options and description during the upload! It also gives you a upload progress bar which is quite useful to have some information about the status.

Create MP3 with iTunes

For instance the kids do not have an iPod. They own a Creative Muvo V100 who just knows to handle the common MP3 format.

In my humble opinion I do like the AAC much more than MP3 and most of my audio files are compressed with that codec.

To make it available for the portables I need to convert them to MP3. And that it so easy with iTunes itself.

iTunes is really great to use it as an audio converter. It supports different formats like AIFF, WAV, MP3 and AAC.

All formats are using their specified codecs with several advantages (small file size) and some disadvantages (loss of quality).

You can select the different options with the menubar going to “Preferences”, “General”, “Import Settings”. There just choose your favourite output format from the entire dropdown list and set the resulting quality.
