Aktueller Standard ist 1280 x 720, aber man sieht doch immer wieder Videos in nur 480p und die Qualität ist meistens auch akzeptabel. Was mich allerdings bei der Auflösung 640 x 480 stört, ist das 4:3 Verhältnis. Mittlerweile sind so gut wie alle Bildschirme und Displays in einem 16:9 oder 16:10 Format. Lädt man also ein Video im 4:3 hoch, so hat man an der linken und rechten Seite einen unschönen schwarzen Balken.

Um das zu vermeiden habe ich einfach mal überlegt, was denn passiert, wenn man einfach Videos in 480p nimmt und in einem 16:9 Format hochlädt. Also 480 geteilt durch 9 mal 16 ergibt aufgerundet 854, daraus wird eine Auflösung von 854 x 480.

Nun habe ich ein Video in diesem Format erstellt und auf Youtube hochgeladen (Video 1/2). Die Qualität ist einfach mies, obwohl das Original wirklich gut aussieht. Die Kompression auf Youtube scheint bei dieser Auflösung wohl nur eine geringe Bitrate durchzulassen.

Als nächsten Test habe ich das Video, das immer noch 480p ist mit meiner Videoschnitt-Software einfach als 1280 x 720 ausgegeben, also hochskaliert. Das sieht lokal erstaunlich gut aus und man merkt kaum etwas davon. Neugierig habe ich das auch auf Youtube hochgeladen (Video 2/2) und der Qualitätsanstieg ist immens!

Fazit:

Echtes 720p sieht besser aus und sollte die erste Wahl sein. Hat man nur 480p, sollte man es auf 720p hochskalieren und erst dann auf Youtube hochladen.

Ja, ich bin so eine “Pott”-Sau, der seine Tasse tagelang benutzt, obwohl ich eine Spülmaschine benutzen könnte. Aber auch da wird die Tasse nach den Exzessen nicht restlos sauber.

Sicher kann man mit heißem Wasser, etwas Spülmitteln und einem Topfreinigerschwamm ordentlich schrubben bis alles weg ist, aber das macht keinen Spaß.

Ein anderer Trick ist, einfach einen Spülmaschinen-Tab in die Tasse zu geben und mit heißem Wasser zu übergiessen und wenn es kalt ist, mit einem Schwamm abschrubben. Das geht zwar etwas leichter als mit Spülmittel, aber ist immer noch nicht die Krönung.

Am besten klappt’s mit einem Radierschwamm! Kurz unter Wasser halten und dann ohne Reiniger oder sonstwas den zu Stein gewordenen Restbelag ganz einfach wegreiben. Radierschwämme sind in sämtlichen Diskountern und Drogeriemärkten erhältlich.

Sicherlich ist Freunde nicht ganz der richtige Begriff, sondern Kontakte oder Bekannte wäre angebrachter. Wenn man ausgedehnte Hobbies zum Beruf macht, kommt man sehr schnell an diese Grenze. Jedenfalls scheint der Google+ Konkurrenzkampf etwas Fortschritt oder Klarheit hereinzubringen, denn man kann ja nun durch Listen schon bestimmen, wer Freund, Familie, Bekannter, Best Buddy oder Feind ist. Was den Datenschutz anbelangt bin ich etwas unbefriedigt, denn dem Werbemogul diese zusätzlichen Informationen zu schenken stimmt mich nachdenklich.

Warum aber soll man nicht mit mehr als 5000 Leuten in Kontakt bleiben? Möglicherweise ist das auch einfach nur eine Frage der Resourcen oder eine lediglich weit hergeholte Ziffer ohne Belang.

Natürlich wollte ich weder Freunde noch Seiten rauswerfen, um jemand Neuem Platz zu machen, denn das Problem würde frühzeitig wieder aufkommen. Eine einfache Lösung ist die relativ kürzlich eingefügte Funktion, sein normales Personenprofil in eine Seite umwandeln zu lassen. Das habe ich vor wenigen Minuten durchgeführt und hat bisher auch einwandfrei geklappt, leider mit einigen Einschränkungen. Es können nur Freunde und das Profilbild übernommen werden. Der Rest wie z.B. Beiträge, Fotoalben, Profilinfos, etc. nicht. Nimmt man den Hinweis ernst, wird das vielleicht künftig auch möglich sein.

Glücklicherweise kann man aber zuvor eine Sicherung seines kompletten Profils in seinen Kontoeinstellungen herunterladen. Man erhält eine eMail mit Fertigstellung und kann ein ZIP-Archiv auf seine Festplatte speichern. Nach dem Auspacken findet man alles schön übersichtlich sortiert und als HTML-Seiten und man kann es mit dem Browser betrachten.

Anfänglich hat mich etwas die Anzahl meiner Freunde erschreckt, denn die heissen als Seitenbetreiber nun Fans. Zu Beginn hat er nur noch knapp 600 angezeigt, aber im Laufe der Zeit kam die zuvor bestrittene Fünftausendermarke sukzessiv zurück. Die Umwandlung scheint also im Hintergrund weiterzulaufen.

Wer ebenfalls dieses “Problem” hat, dem kann ich auch die Facebook-Hilfeseiten empfehlen. Auch die deutschen Texte geben ausführliche Informationen und sämtliche Sicherheitshinweise. Ich glaube, Facebook lernt dazu – schliesslich kann man eine so riesige Plattform und Infrastruktur nicht von heute auf morgen verbessern.

Welche Vor- und Nachteile die Umstellung gebracht hat, wird sich im Laufe der nächsten Tage noch zeigen. Gegebenenfalls schreibe ich ein kurzes Follow-Up dazu.

Mit Hilfe des Archivs werde ich nun die Alben wieder komplettieren, TGIS (thank God it’s Sunday).

Der Button ist sicherlich so beliebt, weil man damit wesentlich mehr Menschen auf seine Webseiten, Blogs, Fotoalben, etc. zieht als es für den Normalmenschen mit Suchmaschinen möglich ist.

Überall wo man Traffic auf sich ziehen kann, bleiben auch die bösen Buben nicht fern. Hast du schon mal einen Link in deinem Profil gehabt, von dem du ganz sicher weisst, dass du nicht auf gefällt mir geklickt hast? Das ist mir auch schon ein paar Mal passiert und die Ursache dafür war tatsächlich meine Neugier.

Wenn deine Freunde einen Link mit einem lustigen Video posten, schaust du dir das bestimmt auch mal an, denn deine Freunde sind ja glaubwürdig. Doch sehr wahrscheinlich sind sie auch schon auf die Trickbetrüger reingefallen und haben ganz bestimmt nicht den Link absichtlich eingestellt.

Diese Leichtgläubigkeit wird ausgenutzt und fängt damit an, dass ein Spammer einen Link veröffentlicht, der wie ein Video aussieht – oft mit dem Foto einer heissen Frau oder anderen Kuriosität. In etwa so:

Klickt man drauf, erwartet man entweder, dass wie bei Youtube, die Videos direkt in Facebook oder auf einer neuen Webseite angezeigt werden. Genau das machen sich die Klick-Betrüger zu Nutze. Sie lenken auf eine eigene Website und tun so, als ob dort ein Video ist und man muss nur auf Play klicken, um es abzuspielen. Doch der Playbutton ist ein getarnter Gefälltmir-Button.

Wenn man sich den Screenshot anschaut, dann sieht man sofort, dass das vertraute Youtube-Design geklaut wurde. Doch was haben diese Betrüger davon?

Ganz einfach: Klicks.

Klicks bringen Geld, wenn man Werbepartner ist. Ein gutes Beispiel ist Google-Adsense. Für jeden Klick gibt’s ein paar Cents. So werden die Buttons nicht als gefällt-mir-Button getarnt, sondern sind oft auch versteckte Werbung.

Auf der anderen Seite kann es ebenfalls sehr gefährlich sein, diese Webseiten auch nur aufzurufen. Oftmals aktualisieren Nutzer nicht ihre Browser (Internetanguckprogramme) und deren Sicherheitslücken werden ausgenutzt, um Trojaner, Viren und andere Seuchen in dein System zu schleusen. Damit könnte dein Computer zur Spamschleuder bringen oder andere interessante persönliche Daten ausspionieren – beispielsweise gültige eMail-Adressen, die teuer verkauft werden könnten.

Mein Tipp:

Augen auf und Lesen bevor man klickt. Wäre das tatsächlich ein Youtube-Video, dann wäre auch ein Link zu Youtube sichtbar.

Doch die Qual der Wahl hat man bei den unzähligen Auswahlmöglichkeiten an Bildformaten, Kompressionsoptionen und Auflösungen. YouTube nimmt so gut wie alles an und wandelt das auf deren Server um.

Das Experiment

In letzter Zeit habe ich auf meinem YouTube-Kanal doch schon einiges an Videomaterial hochgeladen und somit meine Erfahrungen gesammelt und einen extra Test statuiert. Um das bestmögliche Ergebnis zu erzielen habe ich ein Video in HD-Auflösung (1280 x 720p) und 60 fps (Frames per Second = Bilder pro Sekunde) erstellt. Dieses habe ich dann jeweils mit Bildraten von 60 fps, 30 fps, 25 fps und 15 fps online gestellt.

Das Video mit den 30 fps ist das beste Ergebnis – auch lokal am Computer!

Erläuterungen

60 fps sind einfach zu viel und die Animationen werden keineswegs sichtbar weicher. 25 fps sind schon sehr gut und reichen normalerweise völlig aus. Für normales Filmmaterial ist das wirklich völlig ausreichend.

Allerdings können sehr langsame Animationen etwas ruckelig ablaufen – da sind 30 fps einfach besser und sollten bei Verwendung von Laufschriften unbedingt bevorzugt werden, wenn die flimmerfrei und weich durchlaufen sollen.

Für einen Videoschnappschuss mit dem Handy oder einer einfachen Kamera sind 15 fps erstaunlich gut. Für ernst gemeinte Filme kommt man um die 25 fps nicht drum herum.

Besonderer Hinweis

Es macht keinen Sinn die Framerate künstlich hochzurechnen. Wenn also ein Video nur 25 fps in der Originalaufnahme hat, wird es durch eine Hochrechnung auf 30 fps nicht besser. Ganz im Gegenteil, es können Bildsprünge und Unschärfen entstehen, da fünf Bilder pro Sekunde fehlen. Diese müssen aus einem Vergleich des Materials interpoliert werden.

Zusammenfassung

YouTube-Videos haben sehr gute Qualität mit folgenden Einstellungen:

1280 x 720p @ 30 fps

H.264 beste Kompression, Multipass

AAC 128 kbit/s Stereo

Je mehr desto besser?

Der Hype um immer hochauflösendere Fotos und Videos nimmt auch heutzutage noch nicht ab. Kameras verkaufen sich nur, wenn sie möglichst viele Megapixel aufwarten. Genauso verhält es sich mit den Videoaufahmegeräten. HD und Full-HD sind dabei die Zauberwörter.

Je mehr desto besser – das ist aber nur zum Teil richtig, denn eine hohe Auflösung hilft auch nicht weiter, wenn die dahintersteckende Optik minderwertig ist.

Wohin mit den Daten?

Schon lange lohnt es sich gar nicht mehr seine Dateien auf CDs oder DVDs zu brennen, denn da passt einfach viel zu wenig drauf. Durchschnittliche Digitalbilder sind ca. 1,5 MB groß. Auf eine CD passen etwa 700 MB, also ist Platz für knapp 450 Bilder. Eine Standard-DVD fasst ca. 7 mal so viel wie eine CD.

Eigentlich eine ganz tolle Sache, denn da passt der ganze Urlaub schön sortiert auf eine Scheibe.

Warum nicht brennen?

Das Problem mit diesen brennbaren Datenträgern ist allerdings, dass die Datenbeständigkeit unterirdisch ist. Die Hersteller versprechen Haltbarkeiten von vielen Jahren.

Meine Erfahrung – und ja, auch mit Markenrohlingen – zeigen das genaue Gegenteil. Nach etwa 1-5 Jahren war von meinen gesicherten Bits und Bytes nicht mehr viel übrig. Von anderen habe ich ähnliche Schaudergeschichten gehört.

Wohin dann?

Externe Festplatten sind bestens geeignet, um große Datenmengen auch dauerhaft zu sichern. Sie brauchen wenig Stauraum, lassen sich bequem am Computer via USB oder Firewire anstöpseln, sind als Datenträger verfügbar und das Kopieren geht rasend schnell.

Außerdem kann man auf Festplatten nicht mehr benötigte Daten einfach löschen – versuch das mal bei einer DVD.

Eine externe Platte mit einem Terabyte erhält man deutlich unter 100 Euro und darauf passen dann ganz grob überschlagen 700.000 Bilder.

Bildgrößen

Die Größeneinheit für Bilder ist in der digitalen Welt in Pixeln angegeben. Ein Pixel entspricht einem Bildpunkt den, man auf dem Bildschirm sehen kann. Damit wäre das Bild aber nur schwarz-weiß, daher gibt es noch eine Farbtiefe, die dann angibt wieviel Bits ein Pixel enthält um einen farbigen Punkt darzustellen.

Gängige Farbtiefen, sicherlich auch bekannt aus der Bildschirmauflösung des Computerbildschirms sind

• 8 Bit mit 256 Farben
• 16 Bit mit 65536 Farben
• 24 Bit mit 16,7 Millionen Farben
• 32 bit mit gerundet 430 Millionen Farben.

Rechenbeispiele

Bei einer Bildschirmauflösung von 1900 x 1200 Pixeln und einer Farbtiefe von 24 bit haben wir dann 5,4720,000 Bits. Ein Byte umfasst acht Bits, also haben wir dann 6,52 MB nur an Rohdaten für die Grafikkarte!

Rechnen wir das noch einmal für eine Digicam mit 12 Megapixeln, dann haben wir (4048 x 3040 x 24) / 8 = 35 MB Rohdaten pro Bild.

Daraus lernen wir, dass Fotos für den Bildschirm so eine Auflösung gar nicht benötigen, da reichen Bilder mit 5 Megapixeln bei 2595 x 1944 mehr als aus.

Rohformat?

Spiegelreflex-Profikameras allerdings können die Bilder tatsächlich im Rohformat ablegen und dann sind die Dateien dann auch so riesig! Profi-Fotographen wollen und brauchen die bestmögliche Qualität für Ihre Arbeit.

Warum sind meine Bilddateien kleiner?

Digitalfotos mit 35 MB findet man so allerdings bei einer einfachen und herkömmlichen Digicam nicht auf seiner Speicherkarte, weil die Bilder durch spezielle Algorythmen komprimiert sind.

Dabei gibt es zwei wesentliche Methoden der Bilddatenkompression, nämlich mit oder ohne Qualitätsverlust.

Eine Datenkompression funktioniert in der Regel so, dass nach wiederkehrenden Mustern gesucht und diese dann zusammengefasst werden. Somit benötigt man weniger Platz.

Methode 1: Verlustfrei

Gängige verlustfreie Formate sind RAW, BMP, TIFF, PNG, JP2, das heißt, alle Bilder, die in diesen Formaten gespeichert werden, behalten ihre volle Qualität. Die allerbeste Kompression hat allerdings JP2, danach folgt PNG und TIFF. RAW und BMP komprimieren gar nicht.

JP2 alias JPEG2000 wird von Windows 7 direkt leider gar nicht unterstützt. Mit dem kostenlosen Apple Quicktime Picture Viewer oder XNView lassen sich diese allerdings anzeigen. Sicherlich kann es auch die eine oder andere Bildbearbeitung. Auf dem Mac ist das gar kein Problem, es ist keine Zusatzsoftware nötig.

Alphakanäle werden von TIFF, PNG und JP2 unterstützt.

Beispiel Desktop-Wallpaper:

• BMP = 6,9 MB
• TIFF = 2,4 MB ^ Ersparnis 35%
• PNG = 1,8 MB ^ Ersparnis 73%
• JP2 = 0,3 MB ^ Ersparnis 95% (6 x kleiner als PNG)

Methode 2: Verlustbehaftet

Beim Musikformat MP3 wird eine Psychoakkustikanalyse vorgenommen und somit werden nicht oder nur schwer hörbare Töne schlichtweg weggelassen. Deshalb bleibt weniger Material übrig das komprimiert werden muss und die Dateien werden letztendlich kleiner.

Bei Bildern funktioniert das recht ähnlich, denn oftmals liegen sehr ähnliche Farben nebeneinander und werden dann einfach zusammengefasst und später durch berechnete Annäherungen (Interpolation) wieder auf dem Bildschirm dargestellt.

Das dort bekannteste Format ist JPG. Man kann sogar die Höhe des Qualitätsverlusts mit den meisten Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen festlegen und dann selbst bestimmen wieviel Verlust man in Kauf nehmen will.

Der Vorteil ist klar: die Datei wird kleiner.

JP2 kann übrigens bei Bedarf genau wie JPG auch verlustbehaftet speichern.

In a former article I wrote some words about Google Wave, a service to do live and interactive co-laboration. It was highly coveted at the beginning, because people could only get in with a private invitation. Those invites were quite rare and everyone wanted to be in.

After about two or three months, Google allowed lots of invitations and then it began to get very slow and went to a very very very very …. slow performance and people lost interest.

At the end there is an end

Google said, it is going to die, because not enough people are interested in, but I don’t think it is the missing interest. My opinion is, that lots of people tried that in an early beta status where the performance was terribly bad and of course a lot of unacceptable bugs, with that you can not live – especially the malfunctioning gallery for my meaning.

That bad experience leads people to say no, that sucks and never try again, even if it is free. Also I think, that many people can not deal with that huge power of functionality.

I am really sad to see that great product dying, but I am happy about being a part of that, collecting good experiences, made some new friends and that Google will continue to use that technology in further projects.

Bye, bye, good old Wave!

Pricing

In my humble opinion the price for this update is very much to much. Some months ago, I just bought the update from 3 to 4. If the performance increases, then it is some bucks worth, but this time…

The update

They offered a free v5 trial for 30 days. Thanks, that’s great! But using that in makes your v4 operating systems converted to v5. Guess, what happens when the 30 days are over! Right, your VM’s are dead until you buy the update. There is no way back to 4, except for you made a copy of that images before. Ok, the installer warns about that, but is it fair, yet? Why is there no option, that a copy will be created by the installer itself?

Alternatives

Are there alternatives for OS X for another virtualization software? The first application I had in mind was VMWare Fusion. They offer a free trial, too. So I went out to their website to grab my personal copy. Good thought, but that was only a idea. They force you to fill out forms with lots of your personal data. That is not the way I want to get a free trial!

So I went further and remembered some news I read about Sun’s Virtual Box. That is the way how it should be! Free download, free ware, full of rich features and available on Windows, OS X and Linux.

Virtual Box

First of all, I must tell you, that I am very impressed of that piece of software! It is tiny, easy to use and brings all functionality you need and supports all notable kinds of modern OS in 32 bit and 64 bit!

Approaching

In this article I will compare Virtual Box against Parallels 5. I tested several features and performance. The operating systems used are Windows 7 in 32 bit and Debian 5 in 32 bit – both given 32 MB Video RAM with activated 3D and 2D accerlation. Main memory is set to 256 MB.

Performance

Performance and speed is really important when using virtual machines – at least for me. And the winner is: Virtual box! It does not slow down my Mac with 2 GB RAM like Parallels does. It even starts and shuts down very much faster and it seems my harddisk is not tortured that much. Virtual Box is optimized to run multiple instances, and I think that brings the speed.

With performance at all I mean

• Pausing, resuming and sleep like hibernation
• Harddisk usage
• RAM usage left for Host OS
• OSX response (keyboard, mouse, usage of apps)
• Guest OS response (keyboard, mouse, usage of apps)

What’s missing?

Virtual Box is not that rich as Parallels, but here is a list of features which are not yet available in Virtual Box:

• Drag and Drop files between Host and Guest OS, but you can share folders!
• Application folder of Guest OS integrated in Host OS.
• No bootcamp partitions.
• Seamless mode (guest OS window integration into host OS) only works on primary monitor!
• Keyboard input is interpreted as “PC”-keyboard.

Conclusion

The speed of Virtual Box is much better, at least on my hardware. I never used bootcamp and I am a little bit sad, that the seamless mode does not work on my secondary monitor. Also I am missing the drag and drop, but get used to the shared folders quickly.

Parallels got deinstalled!

As a Webkit lover, of course I love the Safari browser. It is fast, reliable, powerful and easy to use. I wish Firefox would use its engine, but there are lot of discussions in the Mozilla forums, that it will remain using the Gecko engine.

From a technical perspective, Gecko is now very solid and no longer lags behind WebKit.

Alternatives

The only alternative I know what uses Webkit is the Google’s Chrome. Unfortunately, they say, a Mac version is not available, yet. But there is! You can download the developer edition, which is a completely compiled and ready-to-use application. Install it by just dragging the icon to the Application folder like any other program.

After the first start it asks for importing bookmarks. So I did, and it works very well. The passwords are taken from OS X‘s Keychain Access and you do not need to enter all your identifications, again.

At the first look, compared to Safari

• it looks a bit more stylish,
• the preferences are easier to use,
• performance feels better on loading pages, working on sites containing Flash objects,
• the developer menu can be found at View, instead of a own menu column,
• no need for an extra search bar, just type into the address field.

Unfortunately I am missing two features, but I can shortly live without:

• Syncing the bookmarks with MobileMe or back to Safari,
• the option to merge all windows together

What Safari does not have is

• the function “New incognito window”.

Pages you view in this window won’t appear in your browser history or search history, and they won’t leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window.

• opening every tab or window as a own thread
  • if one crashes, not all of the browser activity is lost,
  • if one gets unresponsive, you can work with all the others.
• jumping through search results initiated with CMD+F.

Conclusion

I am using it now for a several time. It works very stable and fast. The workflow is great, everything works fine so far. This my new default browser!

Since I got an invite (special thanks to Leuk and Jack Brendon Smoke) I really like it. Sometimes it is quite slow and some things are not working fully, but hey, it is beta and Google stated it.

The Wave is a powerful tool which I think will be a future kind of team collaboration. You can see in realtime what the other participants are typing or changing. A playback function shows you all changes step by step.

Many public Waves are available, where everybody can join and take part. Also, you can make your Waves public by inviting a special email address.

There are a lot of things to do until it matches a fluently workflow, but even in this state it is quite useful.

Apple of course does not want this and sued several times against Psystar, because it is permitted and listed in the software agreement to run OS X on non-Apple-hardware.

A very required assumption for Rebel EFI enabling running OS X, seems to have a Intel processor, because since the release of Snow Leopard only Intel CPUs are supported.

On a Mac, hardware and software are the best friends and everything runs smooth. That is a proof and you can check this out by yourself in any store selling Apple products if you do not own one.

I am really afraid, that OS X may get a bad reputation from all those jealous PC users thinking their Windows OS and hardware is much better. They will run that on cheapest hardware and the smoothness of the OS X workflow is gone. Of course this is the wrong way and I am sure they will blame Apple of bad codings.

The bird got a tiny 4 GB memory card and transported it over a distance of about 85 kilometres. It took just one hour and eight minutes at non-optimal weather conditions.

Downloading the same data over the same distance with a high speed ADSL connection amount took more than two times longer the bird winged.

Many disc accesses are usually done with a Virtual Machine, so I put a blank Parallels Windows XP virtual machine image to the stick, hoping the speed would be fantastic.

But, the hope still remains a hope. The speed is just OK, and absolutely not faster than directly starting from a harddisk. The USB probing sais 480Mb/sec which is a maximum of 6 MB per second, but the average speed I could measure in fact is 5.2 MB per second.

That is absolutely too slow and the conclusion for me is, that flash memory is only really fast if it will provided over the S-ATA port.

Today are still some guys at the demoscene active and coding really amazing and stunning stuff we absolutely could not imagine that it would ever be possible.

Walking to the subway station I saw a an advert with a weird looking notebook on a big poster, but the design is very familar to me, so I decided to take a closer look.

It is a MacBookPro with a unusal thick screen and toasts falling into it. Next to it the hashkey “Toastbook”. This picture manipulation is not very professional, because the laptop’s frame looks quite unrealistic and the visible screen content is not designed by somebody having or using a Mac.

The promotion of trade and industry start2grow.de wants to help young start-up companies in the IT segment.

And now, “tada” (yes, this word was chosen by intention, and if you know why, then you are a real nerd, compliment!) one of the big sponsors surprisingly is Microsoft trying to pinch Apple.

To have all that comfort really greatful on your Mac’s screen, I absolutely recommend the installation of the Fritz.Mac Suite. Unfortunately it costs almost 30 Euro, but keep in mind that you use it every day! You can download a full working trial.

Fritz.Mac Suite

The software communicates via different TCP ports with the FritzBox itself to have all that live data.

In my case the Box did not have the required ports for CAPI and Fax services open. This can be done by simply dialling some codes with the phone.

My problem was, that I could not dial those numbers, because I am using a VoiP enabled handset. The Fritz.Mac Suite contains a Call Manager which can dial for you. Putting the codes in there, solved the issue.

Guess what's in firmware 3.0

Apple invited to a iPhone 3.0 firmware presentation. Of course we are all awaiting new features and some things to be optimized. The iPhoneBlog.de invited this evening at 6pm CET to a live chat and a live audio stream.

There are many rumors what could be and would surely will be changed and added. I have created a voting rumor and you are welcome to take part and then let us see what of it will become true.

Speedport’s original firmware has some bad properties. After login it resizes the browsers window, the interface is ugly and some items seem to be misplaced in my opinion. But, all in one it is ok.

Due to I am having T-Home, I am forced to use the Speedport router because of the built in Modem. I just wanted to use my TimeCapsule only, but that did not work, because I do not get any internet connection then.

In former times I already a had FritzBox and was impressed how far it succeeded with useful options. It was even possible in those days to connect a USB capable printer and to print wireless via WLAN. But now, AVM has implemented state of the art features which are really useful for home users or small networks. It provides now USB-support for harddrives and memory sticks and even sharing them with FTP and SMB, VPN tunneling, call answer machine, fax sending/receiving and many more.

Refering to that article mentioned above, I began some research and found some solutions how to get the AVM firmware to the Speedport.

It is not working by just uploading it the normal way! You need to somewhat compile your own thing out of both firmwares. See my steps, and it will work really easy.

Here is my installation guide for Mac users, but with some fantasy you may adapt it for your own purpose:

First of all, get the Debian businesscard edition (36 MB). The compiling scripts do require some apt libraries which are not available on OS X by default. The stable CD/DVD of Debian 5 crashed during my installation within Parallels Desktop 4.

Begin to create a virtual machine with Parallels by running the assistant. Set the just downloaded Debian 5 ISO file as the CD/DVD drive. Parallels will automatically detect everything what is needed. When the machine starts for the first time and asks you for the installation method, I recommend you to go to the options and select the graphical unattended one. The installation will download everything what is required.

When done, log in as a normal user, because no root access is required. Use the browser icon from the menu bar to download the master script doing all the nasty work for you. For the ease of use, I have created a short URL to type less. You can use the samehttp://kURL.de/opupiin your address bar. If you get a hint, that you have no internet, have a look at the top right corner of your menubar left next to the clock and calendar. There should be a tiny icon and if you click it, you can select a cable network connection. Then reload the script and you should see it’s source text. Store it with menu file, save as. Change the download folder to Desktop!

Open a root terminal window via the menu bar applications, then tools. Go the Desktop directory where the downloaded shell script is located by typingcd DesktopPay attention to the letter case on unix systems! Start the script by typing sh ./download_speed-to-fritz.shThis will do some downloads and may take some time. Now, we change to the new files and run the first script, which will install some needed libraries to continue.cd trunk/speed-to-fritzsh ./install-start

Follow the instructions and read carefully. If everything is done it will start the module configurator which has a nice interface where you can use the cursor keys to change options. Then it downloads the needed firmwares and will re-image them. When you are prompted to reset the router, turn it off! Wait 10 seconds and power it on again. Then the firmware will be installed. Do not interrupt until it is complete!

Then you can access the router over same IP as before or just with http://fritz.boxAll the settings are still kept.

If you made a mistake, you can re-run the last script and restore to the original firmware or just customize other things.

Now I am so happy beeing able to receive faxes and missed calls running on my answering machine by mail to my iPhone!
