In etwa so:

Ganz einfach: Klicks.

To feel as fit as a fiddle on my Mac’s screen I need to have it clean with only that windows in front I am currently working in.

For how to hide unwanted applications without termination I blogged the article The secrets of hide and seek.

The Eventbox is my best friend when getting updated on RSS feeds, Twitter, Flickr and Facebook. When clicking the arrow to see the original or full details it opens the source in Safari as a new window.

If you click many details, you will get many Safari windows open. You can configure Safari to put them in tabs. I have not enabled this, because I prefer that when applications open a browser it should be a fresh window.

When having lots of Safari windows, but you want to have them just in only one and seperated by tabs, you can go to the menu Window and select merge all windows.

Cyberduck normally is the FTP client of my choice, but I had to work on a server where uploading was not possible and directory listing extremely slow. Trying to change the amount of concurrent connections and active or passive modes did not help me out.

To verify it does not depend on my firewall configuration I have tried doing the same on Windows using Total Commander as FTP client. That has worked instantly without any issues and delays. From my former times on the glassy operating system I remembered on the free available cross platform FTP client FileZilla, so I decided to test it on my Mac. And the result is very positive.

FileZilla

FileZilla‘s user interface is very well designed and gives many quick information of all the data I need. The feel of speed is awesome. It supports all today neccessary transfer standards and the preferences provide tons of settings in a tree organized view.

The most important thing for me of course is, that it does the thing what the Cyberduck still does not do the job even with comparing all combination of settings.

One primary functionality I do expect from a FTP client is to be able to use a custom editor to directly edit a remote file. I am very lucky that FileZilla does me that favour using my prefered programming and text editor (currently Smultron).

But when saving a remote file you need to go back to FileZilla to get it uploaded. That is no big deal, but an annoying message box is coming up recognizing that a file has changed. Of course it changed, and I want it to be uploaded. On no account I do not want to confirm that box, so I searched through the preferences. There is nothing and the official FileZilla forum does confirm that!

It has been filed, that there should be option for beeing able to auto-confirm that. The only way until now to get rid off it is to compile the source code with modification. So I did! That was quite horrible, because lot of errors occured during the makefile, but I hit the ground running.

Download the modified FileZilla client 3.2.4 without that always nerving message box compiled on OSX 10.5.6. I would be pleased, when you leave a short comment when downloading to appreciate all the time on spending getting it work. Just unzip after download and move to your Application folder. Thank you!

LittleSnapper is a very great application to make screenshots and annotations. The usage is very easy and absolutely intuitive. Using core animation technology this app makes also a lot of fun and feel homie on a Mac.

The greatest feature I like is to make screenshots of Safari. You can specify a screen resolution and it is rendered with the Safari engine and stored as an image.

This is nice to have all your links pictures or thumbnails. Unfortunately you can only either add a URL or take the active one from Safari.

LittleSnapperBatch

But I want to have all open tabs as websnapshots. And to solve that I wrote my first Mac Application called LittleSnapperBatch.zip using the powerful AppleScript. I hope you find it useful, too.

I am sure you are using the copy and paste technique every day you are using your Mac. Of course this a very impotant feature who nobody would ever like to miss again.

Normally you select the text either by keyboard or using the mouse to drag from the start to the end of the text you want to place into the clipboard. This way marks the text floating including it’s contents line breaks.

On a Mac you even can mark a text by drawing a rectangle! That makes sense if you need a exact text block to be marked. If you are working with text editors quite often, I am sure there was the one or other situation you needed that.

Just hold down the <OPTION> key before starting. The mouse pointer changes to a cross fade and then you know, that column selecting is activated. Now hightlight your wanted area, and that’s it.

Note: This is only working on Cocoa Text objects, like as in text/word processing fields.

I do really work all the day with my Mac and having tons of applications open at the same time. Some are having only one main window, but most of them are having a couple of child windows.

Of course I could use spaces with its multiple desktops, but actually I find it quite exhausting having multiple desktops and to remember where is which application and move all the time. Anyhow it causes me some additional and unwanted stress.

The way I am working is the great functionality using the secrets of hide and seek applications.

First of all, you need to differ between hiding and minimizing.

As you may know, when an application is not ready and you hover the mouse over it’s window, it shows you the legendary beachball.

Having the same colorful icon, the application Spin control from the OS X developer tools, keeps track over all running processes.

If any running application goes busy, Spin control counts the time in seconds of how long an application was unavailable.

Maybe you can discover depending applications and optimize your system and workflow. It should be even a great help for the developers of the hanging application, if you save the text report and send it to them.

In any file dialog box of the OS X you have all your favourites in left pane. They are really useful to quick access favourite places on your computer.

The current things I am working on, are organized on my desktop. So inside a file dialog box, I just click the sidebar and click on desktop to go to there.

But, mostly I am using the keyboard, especially when I am working on the MacBook and using the trackpad. Also, keyboard strokes are still quicker for a fast typer than pushing the mouse around.

Just hit Command+D when a file dialog box is open and the desktop folder will become the active directory.

Managing Files on your Harddrive is one of the most done tasks for people like me. I really got very familar to Finder, because it is quite powerful and I can achieve really almost everything with help of the OS X Automator application.

In former Windows times, I was using the Total Commander. It is lend on the design of the very old skool Norton Commander.

The Cocoatech’s Pathfinder, has like its relatives, two panes with different directories open and you can organize your files from left to right and vice versa. The thought of source and target principle is really practicable if you are once used to this.

I prepared a screenshot of the version 5.0.5.

The top one has almost all options and facilities open, to show you, how mighty this application is.

The bottom is the standard as I am currently working with.

Just imagine, that you have two completely different designed Finder windows implemented in just only one. Let’s say, one has a list view with cover flow and the other a icon view.

Also, you have dozens additional tools like a task manager, detail viewer, terminal and many more.

There are some tasks which are fast and easy to handle within the terminal console. I do not use this quite often, but sometimes when I want to run a self written script.

Because I am as lazy as most people, I do not want to type much. The console helps you out a lot with that. Just type the first letters and hit tab to autocomplete the name.

But what, if you did a download and want to run a included script from the extracted directory? Then you have to use the cd command (change directory) for every directory as long as you reached the target path. Use the magic and just type “cd ” (with a blank after cd). Next, drop the little folder icon from the finder’s window title bar to the console window to have the full path in the terminal session.

Did you ever had a video and wanted to have a screenshot out of it?

The solution is really simple with the Quicktime player. Just pause at the wanted position, size the window as you like and then drag the picture to a document or the desktop.

Grab a picture from video

Voila! When dragging to the desktop the file is named “Movie Clipping 1″ and stored with loseless compression as a png image. If you do some more, they will be numbered.
